Professor Janet L. Dolgin, Jack and Freda Dicker Distinguished Professor of Health Care Law and Co-Director of the Institute for Health Law & Policy, is a member of Hofstra University’s Health Policy Conference Planning Committee.

The committee will host Dr. Stuart Altman, former dean of The Heller School for Social Policy and Management and Sol C. Chaikin professor of National Health Policy at Brandeis University, for its first of a three-part breakfast series titled, Election Results and the Future of Health Care Reform, on November 19, 2008 at the University Club from 8 – 10 a.m. Sponsoring this event is EmblemHealth, Educate ’08, Hofstra’s School of Education, Health and Human Services, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the School of Law.

“President-elect Barack Obama has proposed significant changes to the health care system to enhance access to care, improve the quality of care and to reign in healthcare costs,” said Corinne Kyriacou, Ph.D, assistant professor in the Department of Health Professions and Family Studies and a member of the Health Policy Conference Planning Committee. “There is no one better equipped to analyze the potential impact of these proposed reforms, or to predict the likelihood of their implementation in the current environment than Dr. Stuart Altman.”

Dr. Altman is a health economist whose research interests are primarily in the area of federal and state health policy. In 2006, Health Affairs listed him among the authors of the 25 Most-Read Health Affairs Papers and Modern Healthcare listed him among the 30 people who have had the most influence on healthcare over the past 30 years and among the 100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare over the last five years.

The breakfast series was established to set the stage for a large-scale national conference, New Directions in American Health Care: Innovations from Home and Abroad to be hosted by Hofstra University March 11 and 12, 2010.

Joining Dr. Kyriacou (Community Health) on the Hofstra University Health Policy Conference Planning Committee are; Janet Dolgin, Ph.D., J.D. (Law) and Rachel Kreier, Ph.D. (Economics).

The second health policy breakfast lecture is scheduled for February 13, 2009 from 8 – 10 a.m. at the University Club. Mr. Richard Umbdenstock, President and CEO of the American Hospital Association will give a talk titled, AHA’s Framework for Health Care Reform: Health for Life - Better Health, Better Health Care. Arthur Gianelli, President and CEO of Nassau University Medical Center and Michael Dowling, President and CEO of North Shore/LIJ Health System will participate as respondents. The third special health policy pre-conference breakfast will be held in the fall of 2009 with more details to come.
