Professor Hillary Burgess Presents at Global Legal Skills Conference
Professor Hillary Burgess presented at the Global Legal Skills conference, an international conference with participants from over thirty US law schools and ten countries. Her presentation focused on the conversational style differences between geographic regions and ethnicities, reviewing literature that these differences can lead to miscommunication and prejudice between students and faculty members. Professor Burgess argued that, as law schools become increasingly diverse, law professors have a duty to be aware of conversational style customs in order to avoid inadvertent prejudice against students. Professor Burgess also argued that this cultural awareness can lead to more direct, non-judgmental ways to coach students about the conversational customs for the legal profession.
