Hofstra Law Announces Three New Faculty Appointments

July 22nd, 2010

Yishai Boyarin, Juli Campagna and Mark Padin will join Hofstra Law’s full-time faculty, effective in the fall 2010 semester.

Yishai Boyarin, who was formerly a visiting assistant professor at Hofstra Law, will assume the role of assistant clinical professor of law. He also will continue to direct the school’s Mediation Clinic. In these roles, Professor Boyarin hopes to continue to enlighten students about the importance of negotiation and mediation in legal practice, especially in the context of family law and justice.

Juli Campagna will join Hofstra Law as an assistant professor of legal writing. Before completing law school, Professor Campagna had experience working as an international translator, language teacher and instructional designer. She also worked for the former international audit and tax firm Arthur Andersen for seven years. Professor Campagna was one of the founding designers and developers of Andersen’s in-house Business English Immersion Training Program, which was offered to firm managers, partners and clients throughout the world.

Mark Padin will join Hofstra Law as associate professor of academic support. In this role, he will be charged with helping law students meet the scholastic demands of law school and develop the skills to realize their full academic potential through workshops, seminars and individual counseling. Professor Padin also will organize events that focus on the analytical and organizational skills specific to preparation for the New York state bar examination.

BofA Could Face Liability For Dollar Rolling
By Brendan Pierson
Law360.com
July 13, 2010

EXCERPT:

Though Bank of America insists that the dollar rolls had no material effect on any of its statements to investors or the public, the size of the transactions suggests that claim might not hold up, according to Ron Colombo, a professor at Hofstra Law School.

“If these numbers are truly material to the bottom line of Bank of America, then there's some real potential liability,” he said.

“The practice of dollar rolling is not illegal,” Colombo said. “That's not the problem. The problem is if this dollar rolling causes Bank of America's books or records or communications with shareholders or the public to be inaccurate. If any of those reports, communications, etc., were materially misleading because of the dollar rolling, then you'd have a potential Rule 10(b)5 violation,” he said.
